Wheeling Symphony Orchestra ready for the grand opening night | News, Sports, Jobs

WHEELING — The opening night of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra’s 2022-23 concert season kicks off with a bang Thursday night, Sept. 29, at the Capitol Theater.

Celebrating “American Stories” this season, the opening night gala concert will feature world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and a special project commissioned by the WSO and Music Director John Devlin for the occasion.

“This exciting collaboration with Washington DC Hip Hop artist Christylez Bacon and American songwriter Evan Meier was conceived almost two years ago,” said Devlin. “I worked with Christylez during my time in Washington DC in many different capacities, and I knew I wanted to craft a project with the WSO that would showcase all of her diverse creative talents and her unique ability to engage audiences of all type.”

The resulting piece, “Migrations in Rhythm: A Concerto for Beatbox and Rhyme,” examines how the United States served as a musical intersection point for different cultures, the maestro said.

“Collaboratively, Christylez and I have chosen fellow DC-based artist Evan Meier to write this work which explores the interplay of many different influences that led to the creation of funk and fo-go,” said Devlin. . “Styles from West Africa, coastal Georgia, Ireland, New Orleans, Latin America and Brazil all played a part in creating these quintessentially American genres of music. Christylez will be rapping, boxing, spooning, and even improvising a freestyle verse in real time as part of the cadence of this incredible new work.

Yo-Yo Ma will perform John Williams’ Cello Concerto, which Williams composed especially for the world-renowned cellist. Williams, who turned 90 this year, is a longtime friend and collaborator of Ma.

The couple recently released an album last spring titled “A Gathering of Friends,” which features this concerto.

Showtime is at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 29.
