The USM Symphony Orchestra begins its 103rd season next month

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Symphony Orchestra is set to enter its 103rd season, opening September 29, 2022, performing one concert each month throughout the academic year. Season passes are on sale now at the Southern Miss Ticket Office, 601.266.5418, 800.844.8425, or online at Individual tickets start selling on September 1.

“We are thrilled to be fully back and delivering a full season of wonderful and diverse programming,” said Symphony Orchestra Director Dr. Michael Miles. “From Beethoven to Broadway and holiday classics to Verdi’s Requiem, this is truly a wonderful season for the symphony.”

This year’s season is called, Classics! The Symphony ventures to define “classics” as “works that are familiar or of lasting value with a timeless quality”. With a lineup including familiar ‘classics’ like Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, audiences will also hear Prokofiev’s ‘classic’ Symphony and Verdi’s massive Requiem Mass. The programs will feature a host of talented School of Music teachers and concerto students who will resonate familiarly with many of their themes.

Perhaps the most classic of all musicals, Guys and Dolls, will take to the stage at the Mannoni Performing Arts Center from November 10-12. Considered by many to be the perfect musical, Guys and Dolls will delight audiences with its collection of familiar, “classic” songs featuring director Mike Lopinto’s unique scenic vision.

While the Symphony Orchestra has a strong educational mission for its talented students, they also appreciate the strong community involvement they have enjoyed for many years. They recognize the extraordinary economic impact facing their entire community and customers and have made the bold decision to reduce the cost of tickets for the 2022-23 season.

Individual tickets will be reduced to $20 for Platinum members and $15 for Gold members. And as always, all students attend Symphony concerts for free.

“We hope this price reduction will allow anyone wishing to attend our symphony orchestra concerts to do so without economic hardship,” Miles said. “We greatly appreciate everyone who gives their time and money to support our symphony orchestra, and we look forward to continuing to bring our community the very best in orchestral enlightenment and entertainment.”
