Events Mark 10 Years Commemorating Aurora Theater Shooting

Wednesday, July 20 marks the tenth anniversary of the filming of the Aurora Century 16 theater. During the midnight premiere of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Aurora, a lone gunman entered the theater throwing tear gas into the crowd, then opened fire, killing 12 people and wounding 70 others. The City of Aurora remembers the lives lost in this tragedy over the past week.

Commemorative events in Aurora include:

  • tene Annual Midnight Vigil, Tuesday, July 19
    • Starting at 11:30 p.m. at Aurora Civic Center Garden, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway
    • A candlelight procession through the Garden of Remembrance and a procession of first responders.
  • Hero’s Journey 5K, Saturday, July 23
    • The race starts at the Aurora subway station in front of the theater and ends at the Memorial. Reflection garden.
  • Reflection Ceremony and Other Events, Saturday, July 23
    • Ceremony of Reflection on the Great Lawn of Aurora City Hall from 1:45 p.m. to 3 p.m.
    • Food trucks, live music, beer garden, and community outreach and wellness booths on the Great Lawn from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
      • A spotlight on the power of healing through art.
      • Beer will be served until 6:30 p.m.
    • Chalk Art Festival at Reflection Gardens (southeast of City Hall)
    • Strauss Chamber Orchestra and Life/Art Dance at Reflection Gardens
      • Poetry reading and tributes to the visual arts.

Colorado Ceasefire, which works to end gun violence in Colorado, is the organization promoting the tenth anniversary of the Aurora Theater shooting.
