Bramwell Tovey, Sarasota Orchestra, Sarasota Music Director | Sarasota
The Sarasota Orchestra has named Bramwell Tovey the sixth musical director in the organization’s 72-year history. He replaces Anu Tali, who held the post for six years before leaving in April 2019.
Tovey is a Grammy and Juno winner with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, where he has served since 2000. He was previously Music Director of the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra where he played an instrumental role in the overture of the Philharmonie Luxembourg, one of the most beautiful concert halls in Europe.
“We are delighted to welcome an artist of Bramwell Tovey’s stature at this important time in the development of our organization,” said Joseph McKenna, President and CEO of Sarasota Orchestra. “His brilliant musical talent, passion for education, and immediate chemistry with our musicians inspired his selection by the Sarasota Orchestra Research Committee and Board of Directors.”
Tovey is considered a versatile conductor, with his talents as a composer and pianist. Tovey was in demand as a conductor with some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras, and comes to the Sarasota Orchestra after conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the New York Philharmonic at Bravo! Vail Festival, Boston Symphony Orchestra and Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as orchestras across Europe and Asia.
Widely known in Vancouver for advancing the orchestra there through touring and recording, his vision and institutional leadership resulted in the creation in 2011 of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) School of Music, which is hosted within the Tovey Center for Music, a state-of-the-art installation named in his honor in 2018.
“To me, music is a deep language that speaks to humanity on a level that goes beyond mere words,” Tovey said. “It has been an extraordinary privilege to have been able to spend my career sharing music through the power of the modern symphony orchestra.”
The Sarasota Orchestra has been looking for a site to build a new concert hall for the past two years. More recently, the orchestra said a lack of legal clarity prevented it from continuing to build a hall in Payne Park, the location the organization called the only viable site for a new venue within the Boundaries. from the city.
Starting October 30 at the Sarasota Opera House, Tovey will lead the orchestra in a concert titled Tovey: The Adventure Begins. The concert will feature several Grammy Award-winning violinists, James Ehnes, who performed with Tovey when Ehnes was an aspiring Canadian artist.
Single tickets for these and other Sarasota Orchestra concerts go on sale September 7. Information is available at SarasotaOrchestra.org.
